Circuit Nómada

12 Mar - 03 Oct 2021

text description
FiraTàrrega

In order to compensate for the drop in artistic hiring caused by the COVID-19 pandemic and to stimulate the street arts market, FiraTàrrega is launching the Nomadic Circuit to implicate arts programmers from Catalonia and the rest of the Spanish state in a network of artistic proposals, selected by FiraTàrrega, to be exhibited in the towns and cities of different territories throughout 2021.

This offering represents the equivalent of the artistic programming suspended from the 2020 edition of FiraTàrrega and is drawn from two artistic calls opened in 2019, from the artistic proposals contributed by autonomous communities in agreement with FiraTàrrega as well as from some shows which have been unable to be programmed at various strategic festivals in Catalonia during the lockdown.

The Nomadic Circuit project is not just an artistic offering but rather contemplates, in addition, activities designed to stimulate the performing arts market and establish links between audience members and the territory.

The Hull Vigil

03 May - 03 May 2022

text description
The Hull Vigil

On 3 May 2021, a year-long vigil will begin in Hull with the UK premiere of a monumental performance telling the story of a city coming back to life.

Every day for a year, at sunrise and sunset, a vigil will keep watch over Hull from a bespoke structure located on top of the Hull College building.

Over the course of one year, 730 people will contribute to the collective vigil - a 365 day silent and peaceful performance - to watch over the city.

Freedom Festival, an organisation known for creating the unexpected, is producing The Hull Vigil, as it brings the performance to Hull - the first UK city to host this timely, thought-provoking, large-scale monumental work by Australian-Belgian choreographer Joanne Leighton from Paris-based WLDN.

Participation in The Hull Vigil will open at 10am on 1 March 2021.

The Vigil can run during Covid restrictions and all necessary arrangements have been put in place to ensure compliance with Covid guidelines.

METROPOLIS

18 May - 20 Sep 2021

text description

The season for Metropolis Copenhagen opens on 18 May with a programme of performances and activities in the city until 20 Sept. with Danish and international artists.

This summer, Metropoliss Copenhagen will present a number of artists who, with their works, create space for reflection and new perspectives and challenge us to see new contexts, new paths, new opportunities. How can art help open us to a new future with different agendas and values on the other side of this world crisis?

Metropolis will present performances that, naturally, as a consequence of their artistic format, allow us to take precautions for the safety of the audience, ie. works experienced individually or in small groups, at a distance, and in the open air.

Adapting to the epidemic situation, thanks to the creativity and innovativeness of the artists contributing to the festival, PLACCC Festival will be performing public dance performances in the early summer of 2021, during which a special emphasis will be placed on the safety of artists and audience.

Within the framework of this mini-festival presenting public dance productions, PLACCC invited only Hungarian artists, because - despite it's strong international focus - as last year, PLACCC feel it is important to support Hungarian independent artists through assignments.

On the other hand, the organizers considered it extremely important to invite, in addition to artists and collectives who have been working for a long time, artists who might be undertaking to leave the theater for the first time.

METROPOLIS
Walking Landscapes - Liselund Laboratory

21 Jul - 30 Jul 2021

text description

10 artists walk in Liselund Have and on Møn.

One artist every day for 10 days.

For 12 hours, they wander out into the Møn landscape and invite you to follow - in the landscape or on live stream.

The 10 artists have a special relationship with Møn. With this knowledge in their backpack, they take us to hidden and forgotten places on a journey into the area's nature, myths, moods, phenomena and secrets.

They explore the landscape based on their artistic discipline - performance, visual arts, dance, music, textiles, photography, video - and they use the surroundings as a framework and content for the artistic actions they create along the way. A story, a performance, an installation, a conversation, a picture or a poem.

Art relates to nature and the landscape in classical landscape painting, but how do contemporary artists relate to the landscape in a context of climate change, degradation of nature and a changing awareness of our own role?

For the artists, the hike is a space for reflection, a mapping and a journey of discovery. A free space with high to the sky and space for existential questions and high-flying thoughts, just as it has been for many of us at a time when the world as we know it has been shut down.

Together, the 10 artists create a vibrant, diverse and surprising experience of the Møn landscapes with new routes, new stories and new inspiration to explore for yourself.

Meet the artists online every full hour as they live-stream their actions on Facebook. Or see more on the website about how and when you can hike with the artists in the landscape.

Theater op de Markt

28 Oct - 07 Nov 2021

text description

The circus edition of Theater op de Markt in the autumn of 2021 will be more spread out in time and space.

The festival of the circus workshop Dommelhof in Pelt, on the initiative of the province of Limburg, extends the festival period from 4 to 10 days.

The circus edition of Theater op de Markt is an internationally renowned festival that took place in previous years at the Provinciaal Domein Dommelhof during 4 days during the autumn holidays. The festival can count on about 20,000 visitors each time. The decision to spread the festival longer should give everyone a bit more breathing space. Even at the end of October, spreading the audience still seems a sensible and necessary strategy to allow such a large public festival to take place comfortably.

This decision also addresses the need for many artists and companies to get back on stage. The pandemic has kept them behind the scenes for too long. With this 10-day festival, circus workshop Dommelhof also wants to give the artists time and space to show themselves in Limburg.

In 2021 Theater op de Markt focuses on the presentation of new national and international circus creations that are supported by Dommelhof, such as the latest creations by Circus Ronaldo, Rode Boom / Kurt Demey and Alexander Vantournhout. A balanced, broad public program and safe encounters between artists and spectators in a festive setting are currently being developed. This is partly done in collaboration with a number of other presentation partners in the spacious Limburg region who will offer one or more performances of the festival.

This year too, circus workshop Dommelhof will contribute to the artistic interpretation of the next Winterlight edition of museum Bokrijk during the Christmas holidays of 2021.

Norfolk & Norwich Festival

17 May - 30 May 2021

text description
Norfolk & Norwich Festival

Daniel Brine, Artistic Director and Chief Executive of Norfolk & Norwich Festival, has confirmed that the 2021 Festival will take place between 14 – 30 May. Following its cancellation in 2020, and the continuing worldwide pandemic, the 2021 edition of the arts festival will be a one off adaptation, with programme and presentation designed especially for Covid times.

Daniel Brine said: ‘We, like the whole arts sector, have been navigating the complications thrown upon us by Coronavirus and so I’m really overjoyed to be able to announce that we will be staging a Festival in 2021.’ The Festival, which will mark its 249th year in 2021 usually attracts audiences of around 80,000 for its international programme of music, performance, visual arts and literature in venues and outdoor spaces across Norwich and Norfolk.

Daniel explained: ‘As a Festival, we have no fixed venue, and have been able to be fleet-of-foot, reactive, opportunistic. We have the ability to adapt to a degree, so we have been working to create an exciting, adapted and safe programme for the 17 days next May.

During the pandemic we have been reminded of the value that art has in our lives. People have been listening to music, watching box sets, reading, and streaming theatre to bring moments of respite and connection. We have been doing our bit over the summer, providing support and relief for some of those worst affected through creative projects across the region. But we are all missing the magic, the shared experiences that live art and performance bring us. It’s important that the people of Norfolk and Norwich can have a Festival to look forward to next year and we’re working on something that as many as possible can enjoy.’

But it isn’t just about audiences. Delivering a Festival will provide a tremendous boost for the local economy and bring vital employment opportunities for artists, freelance crew and arts workers, all of whom have been heavily affected over the last 8 months.

The full programme for 2021’s Norfolk & Norwich Festival will be announced in March 2021.

A Thousand Ways is an enthralling, imaginative, and profound social experience that delivers us from isolation to congregation. Part One: A Phone Call – Pick up the phone. Someone is on the line. You don’t know their name, and you still won’t when the hour is over, but through this exchange – as you follow a thread of automated prompts – a portrait of your partner will emerge through fleeting moments of exposure. This is an invitation. Will you attend?

A Thousand Ways is a quietly radical response to this new world from Obie Award-winning theatremakers, 600 HIGHWAYMEN, known for exhilarating performances that challenge the very definition of theatre.

“Never before have I felt so closely intimate to a person just through the sound of their voice.”  Audience Member

“Just when you thought you might be getting a little cynical about the theater…think about 600 HIGHWAYMEN.”  The New Yorker

“The standard-bearers of contemporary theater-making” Le Monde

“Simple but sublime…the show alerts us to the awesome strangeness, and the utter ordinariness, too, of being alive in the here and now.” The New York Times

Liquid Loft - Stranger Than Paradise Online

28 Jan - 31 Jan 2021

text description
Chris Haring

+++ The performance will be available as video on demand for 72 hours. +++

In dance the bodies become political, at the same time the political becomes poetic. In Stranger Than Paradise this double game is played with extraordinary concentration. The title of this production is borrowed from a road movie that serves as an influence not aesthetically or narratively, rather atmospherically. In 1984, the director and author Jim Jarmusch sketched the tragicomic coexistence of three lonely characters as a choreography of wintry forlornness: exhausted bodies in wide, empty spaces, in “posthuman” scenarios. The idea of urban cool, which Jarmusch transfers to the snowy landscapes of Cleveland, is translated by Liquid Loft into a reflection on the expansion of biological capacities: into the mechanical, the creatural, and the “monstrous” of an animal-human existence.

The body is an obsolescent model; it is still needed, but the preparations for its abolition are in progress, which evokes melancholy and farewell manoeuvres. The old utopia of the equality of beings is hidden in the sphinxic shimmer of the dancers. Dealing with the humanimal raises questions of division and duplication. Is the image that the mirror produces an addition or a division? Does it share the view that is presented or is it simply duplicated?

Modification and infection are closely related: we are bio-machines, electronically improved, but biologically endangered. Only technologization, the synthesis of flesh and mechanics can secure us: The illusion of the human, which its perfectly reproduced surfaces can generate, conceals the artificiality of the new species. We will get used to them – that is, to ourselves.

— Stefan Grissemann

In 2007 the two established the Open Arts Foundation – the Night’s main organiser. Like other “White Nights” around the world, the idea is for the audience to encounter artists, art and culture in unusual evening and late-night hours. In 2005 the program included around 20 events attended by around 3000 people. Even then the festival was already a cultural revolution, doubling and tripling annual visits in some of Plovdiv’s major museums and galleries in one night. The night is quickly becoming one of the most recognizable Plovdiv events anticipated and attended by audiences across the country.

In order to think and heal the wounds of the City – the recent ones resulting of terrorism, leaving us in a security convalescence, the ones resulting of the social wrench, trying to divide us, the ones of the pollution peaks which spares no districts – the challenge must be taken up commonly, the common being itself one of the biggest challenge.

The Night of Museums and Galleries festival was held for the first time in Bulgaria in Plovdiv in 2005. The format started by initiative of SARIEV Gallery founders Vesselina and Katrin Sarievi.

How about playing together with the city, in various European countries?

Taking an active part in the community?

What is democracy… …here? …elsewhere in Europe?

Once again this year, Marseille residents are invited to meet the artists of the IN SITU platform artistic community – which Lieux Publics has been coordinating since 2003 – at the Cité des arts de la rue, in the Cité des Aygalades and the Parc de l’Oasis, for two evenings and an afternoon. June 4th - Art in public space panel

At the intersection of the arts, public space, and civic participation lies the ability to create dialogue about what it means to be a part of a community.

Communities are both physical and conceptual. Whether defined by agreed upon values, interests, activities, or languages, individual inclusion in any community is active; a constant negotiation. Public space is also not neutral and always shifting. It is central to the meaning, quality, and accessibility of all shared actions and with respect to the arts, it is the foundation of the audience’s experience. The arts are a way for us to communicate, recognize, and legitimize each other; they are the act of transferring empathy and sharing our humanity. When the arts, the community, and public space are all in play together, a functioning democracy becomes possible, one in which we, the citizenry, share active responsibility both for ourselves and those around us.

We are at a crossroads; the time is short and each turn is crucial.

By becoming more business-like, aren’t we compromising our artistic integrity? By learning to be self-sustainable, won’t we risk losing the last remnants of public money? When asked to prove the value of our practices, should we tap into the rhetoric of numbers, of “growth and jobs”, or resist the whole discourse of tangible measurement? Developing our audiences, should we seek for growth-oriented marketing strategies or deepen the engagement and authentic relationships with our public - or both? And how about the status of the artist - shouldn't that be our main concern?

The crossroads are multiple – between international and local, technical and artistic, experiential and innovative. As long as a crossroads is not an impasse, there is always a path to new opportunities. Let’s keep our minds open and find this very path.

Returning for 2016, this 2 day cultural feast brings artists from across Europe and Scotland, to create a magical spectacle of street theatre, music, performance, dance, video and visual art on the streets of Greenock.

Get involved in this year's Halloween Parade with prizes for best groups and best wee guiders.

Galoshans is rooted in the heritage of Inverclyde. The people of the West of Scotland used to celebrate Galoshans by visiting each other's houses and performance a Galoshans play. If it was well received they might receive a 'treat', and it is this practice which is credited as the origin of the American 'trick or treating' at Halloween.

Halloween is also a time of the year when the fabric between this world and the next is so thin that it is possible for mortals to travel between them.

We have invited artists to collaborate with communities and create work that looks at what happens when two worlds touch.

Join them and journey to another world with Europe's most spectacular artists and performers.

This is the field of transdisciplinary art or inter-art: art between disciplines and genres, between the auditorium and public space, between passive and active experience, between ear, eye, body and brain. Over two evenings, Musica and Dommelhof present transdisciplinary artists from Belgium and abroad with a single focus: sound. How can sound act as a medium to step beyond the bounds of a discipline? This question is also central to the study day that opens the festival. Step into the fascinating universe of in-between-art with sound at OORtreders.

Reality Research Festival 2k16

21 Oct - 27 Oct 2016

text description

‘What is reality?’ This is one of the most contested issues today. The real is said to be multiple, fragmented, virtualized, or even lost, as a result of media effects and social dynamics. The interpretations offered are highly controversial, some point to the disappearance of immediacy, others to the changes provoked by the application of new technologies. What are the layers of reality today and which of them concern us most?

The new technologies have created hyperreality as the new environment for the human condition, destabilizing the senses, affects, knowledge as well as spatial and temporal relations). We move in simulated environments and talk to programmed people and feel less and less able to separate facts from fiction, editorials from advertisements, humans from bots. The virtual is more real to us than the mere real.

Reality Research Festival will investigate how the new technologies inserted between the zones of sensation and consciousness affect our perception and grasp of the surrounding world, what happens when AR, VR or MR technologies set the benchmarks for reality.

Reality Research Festival 2k16 (21-27 October) is a concerted effort by PLACCC (IN SITU partner) and Kitchen Budapest to map and dissect contemporary concepts of reality.

"Mnemosyne is a site-sensitive project about emotional memories connected to places. Mnemosyne was the personification of memory for the ancient Greeks: daughter of Uranus and Gea, Sky and Earth, mother of the Muses. Art, in all its forms, arises from the past, or rather from what the past leaves on us. That is where the name of the project comes from: a modular, site-sensitive, flexible format that gathers individual and local memories in the wider idea of collective memory.
We re-map places on the base of the emotional life of the people living there, connecting locations with emotions to create an emotional interface with the spaces. Places that are normally ignored are in this way enhanced by the fragments of the story they contain. The project's goal is to create an emotional map of a place, starting from memories and experiences of people living there. The starting point consists in a survey; the final one in an installation where the public can visit places wih different eyes."

X/tnt - Dedriving Code

Capitalism, communism, nazism, nationalism, consumerism... create representations of collective freedoms through the use of symbols that should make us feel, powerfull, indestructible...eternal... But their profound nature is to divide- to feed us with a erzats of freedom. They act upon us as a drug, they give us a sense of collective power, but deny our individual basic needs - music, dance, poetry and art in general convey that electrifying feeling for life. A monument is not an art piece, it uses art to convey only one idea - it tames art as it tames human nature. Freedom, all the same is just a word from which we need to be freed.

FREE FREEDOM, is a new type of vehicul. It is a 1 m 20 high mobile pedestal designed to spread ideas accross the city and to bring ephemeral statements into public space. It is a message to the authorities: Ideas are not frozne, there is always an alternative.
