Entangled Shorelines, a conversation piece was developed during a residency at Oerol Festival on the Dutch island of Terschelling, as part of the IN SITU coproduction support programme. 

Building on an evolving Atlas of stories gathered from coastal communities, the Oerol residency was an important first step in exploring how these stories could be shared through a theatrical and participatory form. Through conversations with islanders, encounters with the changing landscape and experiments with audience participation, the project began to shift from collecting stories towards creating space for personal associations, memories and dialogue.

Working on Terschelling also showed us how the coastal landscape itself can become part of the artistic process. Weather, wildlife and the changing environment continuously influenced the work, reinforcing one of its central questions: how do we learn to live with the sea and with what is beyond our control?

The residency marked an important moment in the development of Entangled Shorelines. It was the first of a series of international residencies within the IN SITU programme, followed by a residency in Sardegna and, in winter 2027, at Metropolis KIT in Denmark. Each context allows us to encounter new coastal communities and further develop the work.
